In life, we come across several obstacles that we may have to overcome to succeed and live a fulfilled life. In challenging situations, several possible outcomes may occur. One of these possible outcomes is a failure, which can be defined as “the lack of success”. Success is something that occurs through overcoming a challenging situation and reaching the goals that the individual had set for themselves. An example of success would be someone getting accepted into a job that they have had trouble securing the position for prior. Success leads to an individual feeling accomplished that they have done something that is meaningful for themselves and allows them to reach true “fulfillment”. Fulfillment is described by Plato as “the person’s ability to achieve true happiness”. Success is a confirmation of an individual’s ability to be fulfilled and, have a truly happy life

However, a string of successes without any failure is guaranteed for a person to value themselves far higher than they are, this can be defined as arrogance. Once an individual becomes arrogant they begin to become fearful that they will have to face failure if they face more difficult obstacles in life. The now arrogant individual fears that people will perceive them as weak, if they ever fail, this causes them to dread failure. Ultimately this all causes the individual to only seek success when they are guaranteed to win and can re-confirm their ability to achieve true fulfillment. This behavior leads to the individual never experiencing growth and they never become truly successful, nor will their circumstances change. From this, you can conclude that “An arrogant individual interacts with fear of failure by only taking on challenges that they are guaranteed to win, which causes them to believe that they are perfect for never losing”.

n my life, I have connected with this statement personally because in my early life I found easy success in academics and online games. This got me praise from parents and peers, because of this I began to believe that there was no need for me to participate in sport because I had proven my merit via academic means. To keep this persona from then I only took on challenges that I knew I had a guaranteed chance of success and I began to dread failure because I faced far less often due to this approach. This also lead me to have a very arrogant view on life, believing that every person who happened to be more accomplished than me in academics only got there because of a fluke, this lead me to distance myself from people who were not in my friend group. This mindset has hindered my mental and possibly my physical growth. In terms of my mental growth, I did not expand my friend group and support system far later until 10th grade. My body up until this year was skinny fat, and currently I have put on weight going from 48kgs to 56kgs, most of this weight being muscle mass while losing fat. This sacrificed my image of being perfect by looking weak, however this allowed me to grow as a person and become stronger.

I am not the only one who faces the consequences of arrogance, there are people who are far above my level such as professional athletes who are afraid of failure due to the building up the perception they are perfect by only taking challenges that they are 100% likely to win. An example of this would be Floyd Mayweather Jr, who even has to set up fights against influencers who have never boxed in their life a certain way so that he does not lose, and keeps the perception of him being the best boxer in the world. Anyone from any place in this world has had the feeling of not wanting to lose their greatness because it gives them temporary fulfillment and comfort. However it stops them from achieving true growth and becoming the best possible version of themselves.
