How being self-centered affects the actions we take

What are the proposed solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? - Hey Alma

The poem “We shoot children too, don’t we?” is a poem written by Dan Almagor. For some background knowledge, Dan Almagor was born and raised in Israel. In his early life, he wrote patriotic and military songs for the nation of Israel, this lead him to be surrounded by a culture of Zionism whose goal was to create a Israeli state in all of Palestine. Due to this, he began to slowly despise Israeli culture along with that the government began to commit atrocities against the people of Palestine during the war. Due to this, he began writing Anti Israeli government poems in his older years because he wanted to condemn his own nation for the acts they were committing. The most famous of these poems is “We shoot children too, don’t we

When you first read this poem, you think that this poem is solely on the topic of Israel vs Palestine and the crimes of Israel. However, this poem is actually meant to reflect on human nature and what we do to protect things that are precious to us. Almagor also shows how people are blind to the actions they commit when they are disagreeing with someone, such as when the soldiers abuse the old man they don’t care about the individual but just the fact that he is Palestinian. Almagor also uses Anaphora which is the repetition of the starting words to create contrast between the actions that people do and to create a unique flow which makes reading the poem like reading a speech. This poem, also shows that some people aren’t willing to enact change because they are busy with their personal desires such as being ready for met Galas, Almagor implies he does this because people will not change the problem unless they themselves have faced it.

Timeless Lessons from the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War - Modern War Institute

With this Poem Almagor hopes to reflect that all individuals will commit any action if it means to protect the things that are precious to them or if it helps them achieve personal desires. It also shows that humans will not change a problem because they aren’t facing it themselves because they have no personal connection to that problem. For example, many people in the world would not donate to proper water facilities for 3rd world countries because they don’t face it themselves but they would be willing to provide covid relief because it is a problem they face on a daily basis.

The International takeover in the NBA

(ClutchPoints. 2022. Joel Embiid Holds An ‘Unfair Advantage’ Over The Rest Of The League, Per Daryl Morey. [online] Available at: <https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-the-unfair-advantage-joel-embiid-brings-per-daryl-morey/> [Accessed 6 June 2022].)

Why are there more dominant international players in the NBA now than ever? Many people who recently watched the NBA have probably been asking themselves this is a question. People like Giannis Luka Jokic and Embiid are considered the top 5 in the NBA by many people. The last 4 MVPs have all been international players and the last finals MVP is an international player also. This phenomenon is actually very recent and has only started to happen in the early 2000s. As we can see on the graph below a lot more international players have been in the NBA than there have been before. Most people would just assume that new talent has just appeared outside the USA but that is not the case.

The Number of Foreign-Born Players in the NBA Appears to Have Reached a Plateau  (Business Insider. 2022. The number of foreign-born players in the NBA appears to have reached a plateau. [online] Available at: <https://www.businessinsider.com/nba-foreign-born-players-2016-11> [Accessed 6 June 2022].)

The talent has always been in these international countries have always had this talent (Remember to put citation). These intentional players have always had the talent yet simply the facilities weren’t there for them to develop this talent, There are 2 examples that I want to bring up. One of those examples is Arvydas Sabonis, he was a big man who was selected last in the first round of the NBA draft. He was a very talented big man who contributed to the Trailblazer’s many wins in the NBA in the upcoming seasons after the departure of Clyde Drexler. However, due to the political situation that was present in the Soviet Union, he was not able to play the prime of his career in the NBA. There were also clear prejudices against him during his draft day which showed that the American Media did not want him to play in the NBA. (Watch the video below for more context)

Another example of the facilities not being present so that Talent could be properly trained for the NBA is the Nigerian national team. A few years ago the Nigerian Basketball team played the US national team in the Olympics and frankly got embarrassed with a final score of 156-73 in 2012, yet just recently Team Nigeria faced the US in a match and the result was well… much different. Team Nigeria beat the US 90-87. Many people would claim that Team US is much worse than last time yet there isn’t that much of a difference in the quality of the US roster then vs now. So some may be thinking, in ten years Nigeria just happened to find talent that is able to exceed that of the US. That is not the case, however, funding for Nigeria’s basketball team has increased exponentially as they are given approximately 4 million dollars more each year to fund their efforts.

Simply put over the 20-30 years. People in foreign countries are having access to better education and quality of life. This allows things such as basketball to be given more attention and the talent from these countries is allowed to develop so easily. This along with the fact that the world is becoming more globalized and there are fewer boundaries and barriers for certain people to be accepted into the NBA, more talent which would have dominated the NBA back then is dominating now.

How the fear of failure breeds arrogance

An arrogant individual interacts with fear of failure by only taking on challenges that they are guaranteed to win

In life, we come across several obstacles that we may have to overcome to succeed and live a fulfilled life. In challenging situations, several possible outcomes may occur. One of these possible outcomes is a failure, which can be defined as “the lack of success”. Success is something that occurs through overcoming a challenging situation and reaching the goals that the individual had set for themselves. An example of success would be someone getting accepted into a job that they have had trouble securing the position for prior. Success leads to an individual feeling accomplished that they have done something that is meaningful for themselves and allows them to reach true “fulfillment”. Fulfillment is described by Plato as “the person’s ability to achieve true happiness”. Success is a confirmation of an individual’s ability to be fulfilled and, have a truly happy life

However, a string of successes without any failure is guaranteed for a person to value themselves far higher than they are, this can be defined as arrogance. Once an individual becomes arrogant they begin to become fearful that they will have to face failure if they face more difficult obstacles in life. The now arrogant individual fears that people will perceive them as weak, if they ever fail, this causes them to dread failure. Ultimately this all causes the individual to only seek success when they are guaranteed to win and can re-confirm their ability to achieve true fulfillment. This behavior leads to the individual never experiencing growth and they never become truly successful, nor will their circumstances change. From this, you can conclude that “An arrogant individual interacts with fear of failure by only taking on challenges that they are guaranteed to win, which causes them to believe that they are perfect for never losing”.

n my life, I have connected with this statement personally because in my early life I found easy success in academics and online games. This got me praise from parents and peers, because of this I began to believe that there was no need for me to participate in sport because I had proven my merit via academic means. To keep this persona from then I only took on challenges that I knew I had a guaranteed chance of success and I began to dread failure because I faced far less often due to this approach. This also lead me to have a very arrogant view on life, believing that every person who happened to be more accomplished than me in academics only got there because of a fluke, this lead me to distance myself from people who were not in my friend group. This mindset has hindered my mental and possibly my physical growth. In terms of my mental growth, I did not expand my friend group and support system far later until 10th grade. My body up until this year was skinny fat,  and currently I have put on weight going from 48kgs to 56kgs, most of this weight being muscle mass while losing fat. This sacrificed my image of being perfect by looking weak, however this allowed me to grow as a person and become stronger.

I am not the only one who faces the consequences of arrogance, there are people who are far above my level such as professional athletes who are afraid of failure due to the building up the perception they are perfect by only taking challenges that they are 100% likely to win. An example of this would be Floyd Mayweather Jr, who even has to set up fights against influencers who have never boxed in their life a certain way so that he does not lose, and keeps the perception of him being the best boxer in the world. Anyone from any place in this world has had the feeling of not wanting to lose their greatness because it gives them temporary fulfillment and comfort. However it stops them from achieving true growth and becoming the best possible version of themselves.
