The Impact of Ignorance

The Impact of Ignorance

Response to Poetry Seminars

I will be responding to “I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and “We Shoot Children Too, Don’t we,” by Dan Almagor, both based off the social issues. The response target issue about ignorant and how it effects the thinking of individuals.

Maya Angelou shows the idea of the ignorance towards an issue that another may suffer. In the poem, “I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings,” she shows the importance that ignorance plays a role in characterizing an issue into a bluff. In the poem, Maya Angelou uses contrast between the suffering of the caged bird and freedom of the bird flying over. The caged bird sings, but to the free bird, it sounds to be the sound of the free wind and carries on with unrestricted freedom the bird has. Individual can suffer through issues, however, another person witnessing the issues of that individual, they become ignorant as it is not affecting them. Maya Angelou uses this idea to say, “And his tune is heard on the distant hill for/The caged bird sings of freedom./The free bird thinks of another breeze ” As the free bird flies over the area of where the caged-bird is, hearing the calls of the caged bird. It ignores as the sound of the wind. The free bird is enjoying the environment them, that hearing the calls for help of another bird is hindrance to their life. With that mindset, the free bird believes their priorities are more important than suffering of a caged-bird. That further mindset is displayed through presenting the freedom that bird has, ”And the trade winds soft through/The sighing trees/And the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright/Lawn and he names the sky his own.” The free bird can fly through the wind, listen to sounds are them, being able to have as much food as they want and the sky is their freedom. This shows about the freedom of the bird, creating the contrast between the free bird and caged bird. The free bird can has miles of freedom on end, while the caged bird, ”stands on the grave of dreams.” Why should the free bird have to care about the issues of the cage-bird? It is because of the issue of placing the burden on someone else. For the free bird, it is not their problem that caged bird is suffering. It has miles on end of freedom and would rather enjoy the problem-free life than helping a caged bird which can create problems for them. By this evidence, it goes to show that a individual witnessing a suffering of another, can simply be ignorant to the other individual. Instead of providing help to loosen the suffering of the individual, they prioritize their own self because to them, it is a burden on their life. Those individual’s that choose to ignore show they have no experience on what it feels to suffer; they lived a life with pain and problem free. They never understand that if they were in the same situation as the person suffering, the will take that opportunity to help them because they understand the pain based off that experience and not take the suffering of that individual for granted. However, those that are free, have endless amounts of freedom and ignoring the suffering of others because they fear they will become apart of the problem and start to loss the opportunity of making most of their freedom. However, they neglect the fact that helping an individual out of their suffering, that the suffering individual, will experience same freedom as them, and being able to accomplish the same dreams as them. Changing how others view the suffering of individuals. This can be said with the next response of “We Shoot Children Too, Don’t We?” That individuals can ignorant to fact that we can cause the suffering of individuals.

“We Shoot Children Too, Don’t We?” Response

Let’s take the land

Take their homes

Take their things

Take everything they have

It is for our protection,

We don’t trust them

Take their flag down

Who cares if it is on

A electrical pole

They should feel our suffering

When they ruin a tiny fraction

Of today

*I kind of feel bad though.*

Why should I care?

I have a birthday today!

I do not want to hear

The screams of others,

It will ruin my day.

*Maybe I should rethink this.*

No, No, No,

I do not care about them,

It is their fault,

They had this coming,

They killed our people,

Now they must suffer.

They do not need freedom.

They need pain,

No freedom for them.

It is about us,

Only us.

*I do not understand how it feels*

They should feel

Our pain,

We did not inflict

The pain first.

*No – we actually inflicted the pain first*

Quickly to summarize my little poem (expanding a little on “We Shoot Children Too, Don’t We?”) The individual is reflecting upon how their group of people deserve better than people they consider enemies. However, they are very ignorant to fact that they are prioritizing their small problems compared to bigger problems of the other groups; trying to look as perfect as possible. However, ignorance covers them from the truth of matter that they were ones to cause suffering for other group. Based on the inner thoughts, ignorance covers the individual from the truth, they ignore the inner thoughts as a bluff.

To conclude, the ignorance of individuals, that witness the suffering of others. Without the experience or understanding. Individuals may not see that may be apart of the problem or they are solely ignoring the issue at hand. As a result, they instead ignore the problem and think their priorities are better.

Pleasantville – Issue with an Idealistic World

Pleasantville – Issue with an Idealistic World

In an idealistic world, things are set to be perfect. Nothing in an idealistic world creates harm to anyone; creating a pleasant world instead a depression world, and sharing the value equally amongst everybody. However, the fact is that everybody is different, individuals living in an idealistic world will find the struggling to understand what a peaceful world is; at times, people fear that they loss out on living a perfect world, while other struggle to change. However, in Pleasantville a conflict between the fear of losing perfect and the struggle to find you true self. In Pleasantville, Bill Johnson has a struggle to live in a world with idealism, but Pleasantville fears losing out of living a life with true perfectness.

It is difficult to discover new ideas while an idealistic world, especially with consistent demands from others. Pleasantville Director Gary Ross, shows how the effect of being unable to discover new ideas and pursuing them, can lead an individual to lose sight of their true self and think their life is completely pointless. This idea is presented by Bill Johnson, where he finds to be more of an artist than a Soda Shop Owner. At the running hours of the Soda Shop, David finds Bill Johnson sitting on the floor after he ran out of the ingredients to continue making burgers. David takes Bill to the backroom and asks him what is going on. Bill responds “Well I’m not sure I see the point anymore..But it’s always the same, you know? Grill the bun, flip the meat, melt the cheese…It never changes. It never gets any better or worse.” For Bill, nothing changes for better or for worse – it’s pointless. What is point to repeat the same thing over and over again, if nothing different happens? In this case, Bill shows his lack of confidence in himself. He does not have motivation to discover himself, because all he will get is orders for the Soda Shop. In addition, Bill also accepts changes that are for worse, accepting any change to his life will be a positive thing to his life. He will able to discover new ways to live life. When falling into monotonous life, an individual will get tired of it and will look at their life being completely pointless. With the effect of living in an idealistic world, they will have difficult time understand who they truly are, because of restrictions upon discovering new ideas and the constant expectations. With the feeling of restrictions, individuals are not unable to discover what makes them happy, and give up trying to find things important them. They will there life is completely pointless. However, there is another representation of on how restrictions on ideas can affect an individual.

To continue, I think another good explain is to look at general actions from Pleasantville population; there is a lot to choose from, one I found tIn an idealistic world, things are set to be perfect. he most best was when rioters from Pleasantville committee burnt books.

The fear of losing out on a perfect world, individuals supporting the idea will try to stop change happening in their world. The director of Plesantville shows how when idealistic individuals, pursing the goal of idealism, will destroy or cover any reminiscence of new ideas that change the world. In Pleasantville, when books first started emerging as a new way to discover the ideas of authors. Members of Pleasantville committee whose is goal to undo the changes from converting from an imperfect world back to idealistic world, went to prohibit and destroy books by burning them in a pit of fire. They burn Bill’s book about the art around world, Jennifer’s favorite book and all other books filled in by David and Jennifer, who recollect the literature from outside Pleasantville. Pleasantville wanted to get rid history, previous mistakes and new ideas that can change their world to a better world. The committee is showing they want to get rid literature because it ruins the state of Pleasantville, returning to the world it once was. However, without those books, it is ironic that Pleasantville is make the same mistakes to history prior. Without literature, Pleasantville is committing those same mistakes. However, with the fear that those changes are massive destruction to Pleasantville, they are doing wrong rather then good. Burning things that can make change, can create disaster for a world. Not looking at new concepts or previous mistakes from literature, the same mistake will happen again. A world aiming to be 100%, will find themselves struggling to reach that goal, as there will be different values throughout the world, and it is better to look all the values treating them fairly. However, that mistake will happen when it comes to fear of losing out for a perfect world, who can ignorant to take the time to understand why literature has importance in making a peaceful world.

Pleasantville’s aim for ideal world, shows a picture for failure. With the understanding that people are different and aim to have different values, it shows that being an idealistic world is impossible. Instead, there is a need to have understanding that treating values fairly are better.

Impact of Expectations

Do not use

“When an individual who lacks preparation is faced with strict expectations, the individual will begin to focus on avoiding the situation, which leads to loss of self-confidence.”

An explanation to the connection from the visual, and general idea of my thesis statement; in addition to, the development of the thesis from personal experience.

When an individual who lacks preparation is faced with strict expectations, the individual will avoid the situation, having a fear of consequence, which results in the lack of self-confidence. The photo illustrated goes to show the impact of avoidance as result from lacking preparation to fulfil expectations. The photo shows an individual who struggles to face the consequences of expectations not being fulfilled. The individual, in the visual, is in a dark room that represents their state of mind and discomfort. They hide away from the challenge they are facing, expectations, in fear of consequences of not fulfilling them. They avoid it as they fear the consequences that previously happened to them when they did not fulfil expectations. However, the individual could also be frightened due to never having experienced what it is like to face the consequences. Due to that, the individual will hide away to avoid the consequences. In addition, the visual includes an alternative, the colourful and bright room which represents a second chance; an individual may face the consequences without avoidance leading to another chance, however, their fear would hold them back and take it as a big risk to overcome. As a result, the individual remains to avoid the situation in fear of consequence. It goes to show how an individual feels when they are in this situation, an individual may feel unconfident to build the courage in order to face consequences. Something to add is that when an individual finds themselves in a difficult position where they are caught attempting to avoid the situation. Due to lack of experience, an individual will create lies or excuses since they do not have the sense of courage to face consequence. As a result, this brings the individual to have a bigger loss in their self-confidence. If an individual does not want to face the deep consequence of the loss of self-confidence, it is better to admit the mistake of not fulfilling expectations and to learn from it; compared to avoiding the situation whereas an individual will dread to admit the consequence, and continually lie in efforts to not face the consequences. To connect this, I have provided my own experience growing up.

When I had faced the lack of preparations when encountering expectations, I would find myself unable to encourage myself to face the consequence. The consequences I dread was feeling discomfort as a result of embarrassment and humiliation. Growing up, the process of procrastination would always play out when I had to follow expectations. Most of the time, I would move those expectations as a last minute task; however, it would be left incomplete. As a result, this ended with me lacking the preparation to follow-up with expectations. Fearing the consequence, I pushed myself out of the situation in hopes of the situation being resolved or forgotten. However, a downtrend in my self-confidence started to occur. This led to me unable to allow myself to encourage myself to admit my mistake, even if it was the right thing to do. If an individual were to find me not following expectations, I would still not be able to encourage myself to admit it; as a result, beginning to make lies to get myself out of the situation. Avoiding the situation helps me to not feel worried about punishment and allows me to stay comfortable; however it would become more difficult to encourage myself to admit my mistakes later on.

If you want to continue building your self-confidence, it is better to face the mistake of not following expectations. As a result, you will feel more encouraged and less-fearful of admitting your mistake.
